About GATS-3 Aim & Objectives Methodology Technical Advisory and Monitoring Committee (TAMC) Survey Tools
GATS-3 is a household survey and include the household population in all states and UTs. The survey's target population is all Indian residents aged 15 and above living in their usual residence at the time of the survey. The sampling frame for the GATS-3 India survey is a list of all the villages in rural areas from the 2011 census, and in urban areas, a list of all the NSSO Urban Frame Survey (UFS) blocks. The sampling for GATS-3 is done independently in each state/UT; within the state/UT, it is done separately for urban and rural areas. In urban and rural areas, three-stage sampling process is adopted. GATS-3 covers a sample of 110,121 respondents, comprising 57,018 males and 53,103 females.
The survey uses a standard core questionnaire with optional questions that countries can adapt to measure and track key tobacco control indicators. The questionnaire covers the following topics: tobacco use (smoking and smokeless), cessation, secondhand smoke (SHS), manufactured cigarettes, pro- and anti-tobacco media messages and advertisements, access to and availability of tobacco products, and knowledge and attitudes regarding tobacco use. The field survey for GATS-3 will be implemented in the year 2025.
