IIPS has been playing a vital role in shaping the discipline of population studies. The Department of Extra Mural Studies and Distance Education (EMS & DE) was added in 1994 to upskill the working professionals in a manner of not only theoretical framework but also to apply the skills in real-life situations. The EMS&DE is now renamed as Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE). Since its inception, the Department of EMS&DE has been focusing to provide quality education and training especially for the working professional through distance mode. Since the last three decades, the Department of IIPS has played a major role in creating hub in the sub-continent for enhancing knowledge and professional skills to the participants in the field of population, health and development issues. The CDOE is committed for imparting knowledge of society's most pressing challenges, and to pursuing solutions to those challenges through innovative and interdisciplinary research, education, and engagement.
The Center initially started Master of Population Studies (MPS) and Distance in Population Studies (DPS) Programmes. Presently, the Centre is offering the need-based distance course with the recommendation of UGC in the field of population data analysis and interrelationship between population and development namely ‘M.A. in Population Studies’. The programme focuses on developing an understanding of the conceptual basis of population structure, processes, analytical methods and tools, hands on exercises using demographic and statistical softwares, and related policy issues. It provides the audience with expertise in research and data analysis.During its three decades of academic legacy, a total of 2,191 distance learners enrolled from India and outside India.
The CDOE has been conducting several academic activities throughout the year, such as Contact Programme (CP), Doubt Clearing Sessions, Counselling Sessions, etc. During the last academic session, 2022-23, two CPs (nine days programme) were conducted during June and December 2022. The Centre also conducted eight doubt-clearing and counselling sessions (on Sundays) in this academic period. All these sessions were moderated and chaired by Prof.K.C. Das (former head of the Centre) and Dr.Illias K. Sheikh (faculty of the Centre)
