Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey Knowledge Network

About Us Objectives Project Outcomes Papers

Malnutrition is one of the important public health problems in the developing countries including India. Worldwide, 165 million children below five years of age are affected by undernutrition (De Onis et. al., 2012). India contributes around 18 percent of the global under-five mortality rate and around half of these are due to malnutrition (UNICEF, 2017; Liu et.al., 2016). In spite of the economic progress and decline in the poverty rate, along with socio-economic and demographic transition the extent of malnutrition in the country remains high.

Undernutrition at a younger age has severe and long-term consequences in terms of physical, social and economic growth of a nation. National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-4 reported that more than one-third of the total children under five years of age were underweight in India (IIPS & ICF, 2017). In India, there are several extensive national level surveys – National Family Health Survey (4 rounds), District Level Household Survey (4 rounds), Annual Health Survey (4 rounds), National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau Survey, Rapid Survey on Children and Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey – which provide information on various nutritional aspects of children, women and men for more than thirty areas. Data from these surveys can be used to provide prevalence for different aspects of under and over nutrition.

Adoption of different sampling procedures as well as different methods for measurements of malnutrition, such as anthropometric and biochemical methods, makes it difficult to provide a comprehensive picture of the current levels of malnutrition.  Therefore, there is a need for an in-depth study on comparing and standardizing available data on nutrition using different sources. The most recent survey on nutrition is the Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS). IIPS proposed to support CNNS knowledge network to publish research/policy papers based on CNNS and other large-scale survey data and its CNNS data users’ workshop and other relevant activities to support the POSHAN Abhiyan.
