India has started public work programmes during 1960-1970 as a tool to reduce rural poverty. In 2005, Indian government has initiated MGNREGA (public work programme) to provide guaranteed 100 days work for rural households. Some researches has observed that the very programmes has increased in work participation in rural India. On the other hand, some studies has shown that it is unsuccessful programme and so much corruption in it. This study has used the 62nd NSS round and 68th NSS round to see the effect of NREGA on public work programme. The paper has found that average wages of the people has increase by double in MGNREGA. Secondly, caste factor is playing major role for getting job. Lower caste people are not getting jobs, though they seek for it. Still sufficient funds has not been spent on the programme since its inception.
