Abstract Content (not more than 300 word, should include: Introduction, Objective, Methodology, critical findings & Conclusion):
Kerala has a long and distinctive history of international migration, particularly to the Persian Gulf, which has profoundly shaped its economy, social relations, and aspirations. Over the decades, migration has become a cultural norm; however, recent trends suggest that the younger generation is redefining this tradition through more informed and rational mobility choices. This study examines how youth in Kerala make migration-related decisions within an established culture of migration and whether these can be termed as forms of “smart migration.” The main objectives were to identify the formation and features of Kerala’s culture of migration, understand how this culture influences the youth’s educational and work aspirations, and explore how informed awareness shapes migration decisions. Employing an anthropological-demographic approach, the study combined quantitative data from 491 college students in Kozhikode district with 43 qualitative interviews among migrants, non-migrants, and potential migrants. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate analyses were complemented by narrative interpretation. The findings reveal that nearly four out of five youth (78%) are aware of migration opportunities and 65% express a desire to work abroad. However, about half (52%) also believe they can achieve a successful life within Kerala if suitable employment is available. Educational and career decisions are strongly shaped by migration expectations, with around 40% choosing academic courses aligned with foreign job prospects. Youth today are increasingly conscious of the costs and benefits of migration, reflecting a shift from blind aspiration to informed decision-making. In conclusion, while migration remains embedded in Kerala’s social fabric, it is evolving toward a “smart migration” phase characterized by strategic, knowledge-based, and self-aware choices that balance global mobility with local opportunity.
