Abstract Content (not more than 300 word, should include: Introduction, Objective, Methodology, critical findings & Conclusion):
Introduction: Tobacco use continues to be a grave concern on a national scale, representing the singular legal product that exacts a substantial toll on the health of its consumers. The WHO’s estimate of 8 million annual tobacco-related deaths emphasizes the critical need for addressing this issue, especially in low and middle-income countries where the impact is most severe. Objective: The study aims to examine tobacco use trends among Indian adults and understand the association between tobacco use and socio-demographic characteristics. Data: Using nationally representative samples from GATS (2009-10 and 2016-17) and NFHS (2019-21), the study analyzes tobacco use trends among adults (15 years and above) in India. Bivariate analysis is conducted to examines the patterns of tobacco use and socio-demographic characteristics, utilizing statistical tools such as the Chi-square test and logistic regression to assess the significance of associations. Findings: Nationally, there is a notable decline in overall tobacco use, from 34.6% in 2009-10 to 23% in 2019-21. This decline is more pronounced among men (47.9% to 38.1%) and women (20.3% to 9%). Regional disparities persist, with Mizoram and Tripura consistently recording higher levels of tobacco use, suggesting targeted interventions are needed. While overall trends are positive, certain demographic cohorts pose challenges. Resilient levels of tobacco use are found in rural areas, individuals aged 35 and above, and those with lower education levels subscribing to the Buddhist faith. The lack of significant decline in these categories emphasizes the need for anti-tobacco initiatives. Conclusion: Identified challenges emphasize the necessity for ongoing vigilance and targeted interventions. Sustained policies and culturally sensitive, multifaceted approaches are crucial to further diminish tobacco-related illnesses and deaths in India.
