Master of Philosophy

The M.Phil. degree program is designed to provide high level of understanding of research methods and specialization in prospective research area. This course provides comprehensive idea to conduct future research in various aspects related to population.

Eligibility

Admission to this course is open to all candidates having Master’s degree in Population Studies/Demography/Bio-statistics and Demography/Bio-statistics and Epidemiology (passed/appearing) with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade. Eligible foreign candidates can also apply for admission provided they secure financial support from outside agency. Candidates who have already passed the qualifying degree examinations and those who have already appeared/ shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However, the admission of the candidate will be cancelled, if s/he fails to furnish final result by 30thSeptember on the year of admission.The upper age limit of applicant is 30 years as on 30thJune. Marks and age will be relaxed for candidates belonging to reserved categories and female candidates as per GOI rule only.

Selection Criteria for M.Phil Course

The admission to M.Phil. course is through a two-stage process; on line test and personal interview. The online Entrance Test consists of objective type questions of multiple choices. The syllabus of Entrance Test consists of questions on English, logical reasoning, Statistics, Mathematics, Bio-statistics, research methodology, Population Studies, Demography, and Epidemiology. The test venue is notified in the Admit Card. Based on the performance in the Online Test, shortlisted candidates are called for personal interview at IIPS. Final selection is based on the weighted average of scores of Online Test and personal interview. The Institute does not bear any travel expense of the candidates called for the test/personal interview.

No. of Seats and Fellowship

There are 50 seats available with a Government of India Fellowship of Rs. 6,000 /- per month for M.Phil. However, students with UGC-JRF or other similar fellowship will be considered separately. In addition, a contingency grant of Rs. 5,000/- per annum is paid for approved contingency expenses.

Duration

Minimum three years to a maximum of seven years. Duration of integrated M.Phil./Ph.D. programme is specified for Ph.D. thesis submission and not for fellowship.

Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PWD & Female candidates will be considered as per the Government of India norms only.

INTEGRATED M.Phil./Ph.D. IN POPULATION STUDIES/BIO-STATISTICS AND DEMOGRAPHY

The Integrated M.Phil. and Ph.D. program consists of two academic degree programs that can be pursued with a single admission procedure taken at the entry level for M.Phil. degree. Successful completion of M.Phil. degree facilitates shifting to the Ph.D. program. A mid-stream option is available where students can move into Ph.D. program after completion of one-semester/six-months coursework and fulfillment of other criteria set by the Institute.

Eligibility Criteria

Admission to this course is open to all candidates having Master’s degree in Population Studies/Demography/Bio-statistics and Demography/ Bio-statistics and Epidemiology (passed/appearing) with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade. Students who have qualified UGC/CSIR-JRF or any other national level fellowship are encouraged to apply for this programme. Eligible foreign candidates can also apply for admission provided they secure financial support from any outside agency.Candidates who have already passed the qualifying degree examinations and those who have already appeared/ shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However, the admission of the candidate will be cancelled, if s/he fails to furnish final result by 30thSeptember on the year of admission.The upper age limit of applicant is 30 years as on 30thJune. Marks and age will be relaxed for candidates belonging to reserved categories and female candidates as per GOI rule only.The Institute reserves the right to decide the number of seats to be filled in. The Institute also reserves the right to change/alter certain rules at any time.

The selection for Integrated M.Phil. and Ph.D. program is based on weighted average of scores of online entrance test, research proposal and personal interview. The Institute will not bear any travel expense of the candidates called for the test/personal interview.

Number of Seats

There are 50 Seats with Government of India Fellowship for M. Phil. and integrated M.Phil./Ph.D. programme.

Fellowship

Each selected Indian student will be awarded a Government of India fellowship @ Rs. 6,000/- per month. If a candidate opts for M.Phil. degree only, s/he will be eligible for a contingency grant of Rs. 5,000/- per annum for approved contingency expenses.

The following guidelines are applicable for the Integrated program with different options and fellowships:

a. UGC-JRF and Other Fellowships

  • All students enrolled for the Integrated M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs undergo full time one-semester course work for six months.
  • Only those students who have cleared M.Phil. coursework with “A” and above grade (equivalent of 65% and above for general students) or “B-Plus” and above grade (equivalent of 55% and above for SC/ST/OBC/PWD students) are eligible for opting mid-stream option.
  • Students who have been successful in course work (“A” and above grade for general students and“B-Plus” and above grade for SC/ST/OBC/PWD students), but desirous of completing M.Phil. can continue and submit the dissertation for the award of M.Phil. degree. Such students desiring to complete M.Phil. degree are required to submit a formal application.
  • All other students continue to complete M.Phil. and submit their dissertation. These students are allowed to continue Ph.D. program, provided they have secured “B-Plus” and above grade (equivalent of 55% and above for general students) of “B-Only” or above grade (equivalent of 50%and above for SC/ST/OBC/PWD students) in M.Phil. degree and have external fellowship (JRF/CSIRETC).

b. Government of India Fellowship

  • All those who got admission in the Integrated M.Phil. and Ph.D. Program with Government of India fellowship but subsequently pass JRF or get funding from any other sources and secure “A”and above grade (equivalent of 65% and above for general students) or “B-Plus” and above grade (equivalent of 55% and above for SC/ST/OBC/PWD students) are eligible for opting mid-stream option. Such students desiring to move into the Ph.D. program are required to submit a formal application.
  • The students enrolled in Integrated M.Phil. and Ph.D. Program with Government of India fellowship have to complete the M.Phil. degree and seek fresh admission for Ph.D. program.

c. Certificate of course work

Students, who move into direct Ph.D. through mid-stream option, receive a Certificate for the Pre-Doctoral Course Work undertaken by them for one semester.

Duration of Program

  • JRF or other Fellowship holders who are eligible for mid-stream option must complete ones semester and go directly to the Ph.D. programme.
  • All JRF or other fellowship holders who are not eligible according to the criteria or not opted formid-stream option must complete the M.Phil. Programme of two semester /one academic year and then continue for the Ph.D. programme.
  • Total duration of Integrated M.Phil. and Ph.D. programme is for a minimum of three years, including coursework and maximum of seven years.
  • Extension beyond six years may be considered for one more year for In-service candidates or those who have opted for part-time before three years of regular research work, including course work/M.Phil.
  • The women candidates and persons with disability (more than 40% disability) may be allowed are laxation of one year for M.Phil. and two years for Ph.D. in the maximum duration.
  • The women candidates may be provided Maternity Leave/Child Care Leave once in the entire duration of M.Phil./Ph.D. as per the prevailing UGC guidelines (currently 240 days). Male candidates are eligible for Paternity Leave as per Govt. of India norms (currently 15 days) issued from time to time at full rates of fellowship once during the tenure of their award.
