Master of Art in Population Studies (Distance Mode)

M.A. Population Studies (Through Distance Mode Education) - Offline Admission Procedure

In view of the growing demand for intensive and need-based training in the field of population, and inter-relationship between population and development, the Institute has started a distance education program leading to M.A. in Population Studies (through correspondence). The program is also devised to cater to the training needs of government and non-government officials. The course aims to strengthen the capacities of working professionals and impart the knowledge in the area of demography and Population Studies. The program is reaching out to a large number of Government and non-governmental officials involved in the field of health, family welfare and other population related programs at various levels. This is a need-based distance course with the recommendation of UGC in the field of population data analysis and inter-relationship between population and development namely; M.A. in Population Studies. The deadline for submission of application for this course is 31st July every year.

Eligibility criteria for admission

Admission to this course is open to all those with a Bachelor’s degree in any social science subject/Health/Math’s/ Stats or any similar degree recognized by Indian/Foreign universities with 50 percentage marks for general candidates and 45 percentage marks for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC and PWD category. Candidates having master’s degree and also those who are having work experience will be given due weight age. The cut off percentage can further be reduced by the admission committee for candidates with any additional qualifications. Reservation criteria will be followed as per the Government of India norms.After successfully completing all academic requirements given in the guidelines, the registered distance learner will be awarded degree of “M.A. Population Studies” irrespective of any discipline he/she come from graduate level.

Selection criteria

Selection of candidates for the course will be done by a selection committee duly constituted by the Director of the Institute.
Reservation: Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PWD candidates will be considered as per the Government of India norms.

Number of seats and Fellowship

There are 100 seats available for admission to this course. However, the Institute reserves the right to decide number of students to be enrolled in each academic session depending upon number of applications received.

Duration of Course

This course can be completed in a minimum period of two years to maximum period of four years. In case if candidate is not able to complete the course in a given time period, s/he can avail one-year extension after paying 50% of the course fee. Maximum two such subsequent extensions are permitted to complete the course. If the candidate fails in completing all the formalities even after availing two continuous, she/he is not being eligible for degree and his/her registration automatically stands cancelled without any intimation.

Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PWD candidates will be considered as per the Government of India norms.

Course Details

There are following two components of teaching under this program:

  • Sending self-instructional course material: the self-instructional course material is sent to the students after enrolling in the course, which includes instructions for self-study and self-assessment exercises.
  • Contact program in the Institute: Every year two contact programs of two weeks duration is organized at the Institute usually in the month of December and June. Each student is required to attend at least one contact program. During the contact program, practical exercises related to technical papers, computer applications and preparation of term paper is given.
